The Purpose and Place For a Spiral Staircase

I love a spiral staircase, especially the design and installation. Spirals come with some heavy restrictions beyond that of a “normal” staircase. First and foremost is the idea that a spiral stair serves as a secondary staircase in a home or business; or it serves as a loft access that does not exceed 400 to 500 square feet (depending on local codes).
Code compliant spirals are rather vague when you consider it is under or applies to the BOCA, UCB, CABO, IRC 2003, IRC 2006, or IFC 2006 codes. One must check with their local building department to get an update on what codes your spiral with fit.
Here is a short list of the most common code factors:
1. Minimum clear walking path of 26 inches. This means that the spiral will be a minimum 5-foot diameter
2. Each tread will have a minimum of 7-1/2 inch tread depth and 12 inches from the narrow edge.
3. The riser height (from the top one tread to the next) shall not be more than 9-1/2 inches in height.
4. The staircase must maintain a minimum headroom of 6 foot 6 inches.
5. The balusters (spindles) shall be installed so that a 4 inch sphere cannot pass through. A couple code agencies permit up to 4-3/8″.
6. The stairway must have at least one handrail on the wide edge of the tread.
7. Handrail height, measured vertically from the nose of the tread, shall not be less than 34 inches and not more than 38 inches.
Some define a spiral as a stair which winds around a central pole. That doesn’t always hold true. Five years ago a homeowner was given the okay through his building department to install a ladder or spiral accessing his 400 square foot library loft. They did not want the traditional spiral, but rather the look of a free standing staircase with glue-laminated stringers. This would require an inside and outside handrail, the inside being a 6 inch radius. We got the classification of a ladder and built a complete free standing spiral stair with enclosed risers, inside and outside skirts. In essence, a spiral can be creative a creative design only housed by your imagination.
Here’s a fun fact: Spiral stairs in medieval times were made of stone and were installed in a spiral down right. This put attacking swordsmen at a disadvantage who were generally right handed and served as defensive in design and structure

Spiral Staircases to Heaven

There is something so romantic about staircases. They invoke an image of a knight rushing up the spiral stairs to the top of the tower to save his damsel in distress.
Spirals have been used for centuries, mostly because they could fit in tight spaces and could be built of almost any material, to great heights. In ancient castles, they were built in towers, of stone, in a clockwise direction, so that they could be defended easier – an attacking swordsmen would have to fight with his right hand in the narrow part of the stairs.
Spiral staircases are designed around a central pole, with railing on one side only. The stairs are narrower close to the pole and wider on the opposite end, making them difficult to use for people with disabilities. Their design is meant for the effective use of space, and not for comfort. But, the spiral design allow for some very interesting designs, and there are many significant staircases in the history of architecture.
One of the most famous stories about spiral staircases comes from Santa Fe, New Mexico, from the Loretta Chapel, where original builders forgot to build any kind of stairs to the choir loft. As an answer to the nuns’ prayer, one day a shabby strangers came and offered his help. He proceeded to build beautiful, twenty feet high spiral stairs in only three months, with no nails at all, with two full revolutions around the central pole. The stairs are still one of the main attractions for tourists visiting this lovely old church.
Spiral stairs can be used indoors and outdoors, of any material that fits the architecture of the home. Outdoor spiral staircases are usually made of metal or wood, in order to reach upper floor, roof terrace or a balcony. Indoor spiral staircases can have many uses, but the main goal is usually to use small or narrow space, to build stairs to reach upper floors.
With some imagination, spiral staircases can be a real asset to the home design. They can be built with impressive, carved and decorative railing, to serve not only as stairs, but as a piece of art. This is particularly true for iron spiral staircases, that can be built to fit any interior decorating scheme. Spiral staircases are very popular in remodelling of old industrial buildings into living spaces like lofts, which are often of great heights and allow for different levels.
A spiral stair case in this case can be a focal point of the whole home. Classical homes can also benefit from the intriguing design of a spiral staircase, particularly in libraries and studies. The railings can combine materials like fine woods, glass, rope, carpeting and others, only home owner’s imagination is the limit. But, in general, spiral staircases are called into use when the space is limited and can be of great help to reach seldom used spaces like attics, which can be then converted into an extra room for a teenager, or a studio for an empty-nester.

Coil Binding Using the GBC CC2700 Plastic Spiral Coil Inserter
The GBC CC2700 coil inserter (formerly the Ibico 240CB Coil Inserter) is an innovative solution for Coil Binding, and offers many features that will enable you to easily and efficiently produce attractive Coil-bound documents. Though ruggedly built, the 240CB is compact and light enough to use on any table or desk. It has been designed for easy operation, as part of the GBC product line.
One of the most unique feature of the CC2700 is its exclusive Spine Former. This is an Ibico excusive, and assists the operator in rapidly forming the document to the curve of the coil for easy insertion of the element. Additionally, the CC2700 has dual moving rollers making coil easier to insert.
Here are six steps for coil binding using the CC2700 coil inserter:
Select the appropriate size coil for your document by measuring your book or using the convenient coil sizing guide located on all of our coil binding product pages.
Adjust the rollers to the appropriate level for the size coil being used by pulling out the knob on either side of the system, and moving it to “lowest”, “center” or “highest” position (see chart), depending on coil size.
Place the unpunched edge of the coil document into the spine former.
Start the coil element by hand into the first three or four holes of the document, as illustrated.
Hold the document firmly on both ends, with your fingers just below the punched holes, to prevent the pages from separating.
Position the document with the standard coil in between the two rollers. Hold in place while the rollers spin the coil through the document. Once the coil begins to spin through the holes, remove pressure from the leading coils. These coils will find their way into the holes if they are pushed from behind.
Finish the document using a pair of spiral coil hand crimping pliers.

Mental Depression and Its Downward Spiral
The term mental depression brings fear to those who hear it. Mental plus illness leads some people to think “crazy”. This is of course untrue. Although mental depression is a real medical condition it isn’t insanity in the classic, negative sense. Drop the mental illness stereotypes. It can be cured, and mental depression does not make a person some type of sub human. Mental depression attacks about 15 million Americans each year. But 2/3 of those never seek medical attention because of their fear. Make health the primary concern. Wishing away mental depression doesn’t work. The illness is persistent. It can affect anyone, anywhere at any time. It doesn’t care about your color or the god you worship. It has no care for financial or social status. It does not care if you are young or old. This disease has no boundaries. Early detection can be a great boon when it comes to treatment. But the signs of mental depression aren’t easy to spot. Everyone is down from time to time.
The general term depression is better used to describe a temporary depressed or sad mood. By contrast, major depression is a serious and often disabling condition that can significantly affect a person’s work, family and school life, sleeping and eating habits, and general health. In Western countries, around 3.4% of people with major depression eventually commit suicide, and up to 60% of all people who commit suicide have depression or another mood disorder. Depressed individuals have a shorter life expectancy than those without depression, being more susceptible to medical conditions such as heart disease. However, depression may be overdiagnosed, and current diagnostic trends arguably have the effect of medicalizing sadness.
Depression is a loaded word in our culture. Many associate it, however wrongly, with a sign of weakness and excessive emotion. This is especially true with men. Depressed men are less likely than women to acknowledge feelings of self-loathing and hopelessness. How is depression expressed in men? Frequently, it comes out in more “socially acceptable” forms. Anger, aggression, reckless behavior and violence, along with substance abuse, can be signs of an underlying depression. You might hear complaints about fatigue, irritability, sleep problems, and loss of interest or sudden excessive interest in work and hobbies. Even though depression rates for women are twice as high as those in men, men are a higher suicide risk, especially older men.
Depression is a major risk factor for suicide. The deep despair and hopelessness that goes along with depression can make suicide feel like the only way to make the pain go away. Suicidal individuals often give warning signs or signals of their intentions. The best way to prevent suicide is to know and watch for these warning signs and to get involved if you spot them. If you believe that a friend or family member is suicidal, you can play a role in suicide prevention by pointing out the alternatives, showing that you care, and getting a professional involved.
There are a variety of symptoms that may indicate mental depression. Sufferers avoid contact with others. They may not find any enjoyment in activities that once comforted them. Sleeplessness and insomnia are common. People may begin to eat more than usual or less than usual. Dealing with others becomes a chore. Feelings of hopelessness may arise, and despair results. Even physical health will begin to deteriorate. They can be suffering from mental depression and not even realize it. Sometimes we have to realize it for them.
Depression is caused by a variety of possibilities. Stress can be a key. Many things cause stress. Stress comes from relationships and even the struggle to make ends meet. There is also stress from losing someone you love. It is also believed that mental depression is passed on through the genes. Many things cause depression. But there are many treatments too. Talk therapy is a good treatment. Prescription drugs and natural herbs can also work. If treated, mental depression can be cured.Depression is generally ranked in terms of severity — mild, moderate, or severe. The degree of your depression, which your doctor can determine, influences how you are treated. Symptoms of depression include:
* Trouble sleeping or excessive sleeping
* A dramatic change in appetite, often with weight gain or loss
* Fatigue and lack of energy
* Feelings of worthlessness, self-hate, and inappropriate guilt
* Extreme difficulty concentrating
* Agitation, restlessness, and irritability
* Inactivity and withdrawal from usual activities
* Feelings of hopelessness and helplessness
* Recurring thoughts of death or suicide
Low self esteem is common with depression. So are sudden bursts of anger and lack of pleasure from activities that normally make you happy, including sex.
Depressed children may not have the classic symptoms of adult depression. Watch especially for changes in school performance, sleep, and behavior. If you wonder whether your child might be depressed, it’s worth bringing to a doctor’s attention. For some people, a combination of many factors may be causing clinical depression. For others, a single factor may be triggering the illness. Depression often is related to the following.
* Imbalance of brain chemicals called neurotransmitters -
* Certain diseases or illnesses –
* Negative thinking patterns –
* Family history of depression –
* Difficult life events –
* Certain medications –
* Frequent and excessive alcohol consumption.
Now, knowing all this about Mental Depression, it’s up to you to get on the ball and maybe read some more of the information on the site.

Spiral Wound Gaskets Are of Prime Importance Due to Its Usage
Generally when two metallic objects work in a position in which they are in a physical link with each other then there is a huge risk of breakage and leakage. So in a situation in which two metallic objects are working together with a physical there is a need of a gasket. Spiral wound Gasket is actually used as a filling between the two metallic objects working together. The use of gaskets results in lowering the cost for the use of machines. The filling between the mechanical objects is basically mechanical seal coating which results in long life operations of machines.
Spiral wound gasket can be manufactured with a plenty of raw material. Examples of these raw materials are silicon, rubber, paper and many more. The use of raw material for a gasket mainly depends on the type of use and the place and temperature where the gasket is supposed to be placed. For some applications gaskets may be made of asbestos. The main purpose of the gasket is to tightly fill the space including the irregularities between the two metallic objects, so it is manufactured with the material that is most appropriate according to the situation.
Material
The spiral wound gaskets are manufactured with a combination or mix metallic material and filler material, normally a carbon rich stainless steel is used as a chosen material for the manufacturing of Spiral wound gaskets.
Shape
Although many other shapes can be used for the product but, the circle shape is most commonly in use.
The filler material is generally made up of flexible graphite that winds in the same directions but starting from the opposite side. The resultant product is a combination of growing circles of alternating layers of fillers and metals.
The spiral wound gaskets is an expensive product. The use of spiral wound gasket is very durable and reliable. It lasts for a very long time, hence giving the concerned user the guarantee that it is worth all the money spent on it while making its purchase. It has a strong structure, which is the prime reason for its long lasting and durable nature.
The durability of spiral wound gasket mainly depends on the mechanical characteristics of the metal strips in use, unlike the virtue of traditional comprehensive gaskets. Hence it can be easily preferred over the traditional gasket due to its great advantages.
