I go through phases. And basically these phases are knitting and reading. When I am involved in one the other doesn't merely suffer, it ceases to exist. I guess cooking and yoga are in there somewhere too, but I manage to be more balanced with them.
Those of you who are geeky readers already know that the Finalists for the National Book Awards were announced at noon on Wednesday. I know, because not only am I on their email update list but because I kept neurotically checking the website. (There was a lag between the web announcement and the email as I had suspected.) At that point I did a few things:
- Called the New School (Wollman Hall) and purchased tickets for the November 17th reading.
- Printed out the list of winners
- Tried to log into my library account to start putting things on hold. (But I had forgotten my password.)
Yes, this will be the second year in a row in which I read all of the books by all of the finalists - even poetry and especially non-fiction, which I desperately need curated for me. By happenstance, I am starting with a young adult, non-fiction book, Charles and Emma: The Darwins' Leap of Faith.
As the other selections trickle in, I will certainly enjoy them in their variety of genres.
In other excitement, I found that I am not alone in setting myself odd (maybe tedious) tasks such as this. We had dinner with some friends over the weekend and a fellow guest confessed that he had read all of the Modern Library's 100 Best Novels, including the tiresome Studs Lonigan Trilogy.
Hmmm - maybe after I'm finished with this.
